Durango Public Library

Bruce Flynn was Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture partner-in-charge and design partner

This 42,000sf library is perched above the Animas River in this southwestern Colorado town, connected to the community by a vibrant trail system and comfortably nestled in an older neighborhood.

An extensive public input process generated 2,000 comments and lead to a civic place that reflects the community’s rich ranching and railroading past as well as its diverse future as a mecca for recreation, community activity and sustainability.    The community identified with the design vision of the library as a “beacon” to the community and that is reflected in the entry architecture.

A Promenade connects the entry to all collections and the river patio with its “life mask” display of 50 notable world figures.  Unique features include an automated book handling system, collaboration spaces throughout, a community room for lectures and performance, reading patios for all seasons, a southwest history collection and daylighted views to stunning scenery throughout.

The Durango Public Library was the first in Colorado to receive USGBC LEED Gold certification and was selected as one of ten U.S. Landmark Libraries by the Library Journal.
