Durango Recreation Center

This project began with a master plan for the LaPlata County Fairgrounds, seeking to meet needs for a variety of City and County recreation, events and multi-use needs.  The site is adjacent the Animas River trail and a major tourist driving route.

A wide variety of both recreation and community programs are accommodated in the 74,000sf facility.  A large “leisure” pool provides warm water for fun and therapeutic activities for all ages along with a 10×11 lane lap pool with diving well.  A second floor fitness and weights deck overlooks the park and spectacular valley views.  The gym is complimented by studio spaces for court sports, dance-aerobics, spinning and other active uses.

Community social and cultural activities are accommodated in a Multi-use space for 250, class & crafts rooms and a teen area.  A promenade links center spaces with regional materials and colors and columns from historic park stadium stones.

This facility is a source of community pride and has become a destination of citizens, tourists and visitors from all across the Four Corners region.
